Making a plan and sticking to it is the safest route. Heading into the unknown without a plan or a map is the most adventurous route, the least familiar route, the most open-to-what-the-universe-has-in-store-for-you route, the most educational route, the riskiest route. Personally I think the best guidance is from a psychic divining rod. Just listen to that voice, and step with confidence into the greater world of the unknown, and reap huge rewards. Everyone has there own comfort zone, for some it is stick-to-the-familiar, for others it is head-into-the-rain forest-without-study,-plan-or-guide. Probably the course that promotes the greatest development and joy for most people is a course that is just outside their comfort zone, and short of their sense of utter recklessness. I like to prepare myself for my journey as best I can, and then I strike into unknown territory with relative confidence. I have discovered on occasion that I underprepared... yet in every instance so far, the only price I had to pay was a small adventure

"Except the longer you stare at the map, the more you wonder if that's the place you want to go. Your eyes keep searching for roads not listed. Uncharted territory. The wild. Something that'll take you by surprise and knock you off your feet."
On my second read I must say, I think you have answered your own question. You know, now just try to be brave. Take your ruby slippers and you'll be just a few clicks from home.
The most direct route from Baltimore to Greensburg is I-70. I-70 begins just off the Baltimore beltway, and if I'm driving home from north of Baltimore, I get on I-70 for about four miles before switching over to a different highway.
Sometimes it's incredibly tempting not to get off on that other highway, but just to keep driving. I-70 will take me to Greensburg, it will take me to Ohio, and with just a few more switches, it would take me all the way back to Washington State.

We're all entitled our moments of sulkiness every now and then.

Sometimes you don't even need maps.
