I've just spent the past 3 hours on Amazon, picking through music and books, trying to figure out a grouping of specific things that I want to buy, and just now suddenly decided... I don't really want anything.

At least my time was well wasted.

As a side note, I'm on Season 3 of Heroes. Fantastic show. I can thank slothfulzel for getting me into the series ( Read more... )

Personally, I found creative writing highly dissatisfying as a major, but I might be in the minority. Music Composition is brilliant, so long as you're doing it in a place that you love, working with the kinds of people who possess talents that challenge you. English is versatile as all get-out. Basically, you've got an awesome mix going on here.

As for Linguistics and Latin: ever think about an International Studies program? That would require copious work with numerous languages. Or a program in Sacred Music? That always has lots of Latin. Classics is an option, too, if the institution you're applying to has a program. Do you know where you're looking, in terms of the college itself?

International Studies? I'm not sure I've heard of that, to be honest. But I'm absolutely fascinated with languages (despite my very few dealings with them); conjugating verbs was one of my favourite activities in French, and I love it when I come across a foreign word that's been inducted into the English language. Funnily enough, I absolutely hate English grammar. But etymology and vocabulary in general is just... awesome.

No matter where I apply, I'll be considered a transfer student (I've got a single pesky semester of college at my back). My last major was Music Composition, and though I love the idea of it (for the longest time, I've wanted to be a film composer), when I was actually in the process of doing it, I was struck with how... narrow the field felt. I only had one class that wasn't in the music building; all campus-wide events were taken up with mandatory midday music concerts; a lot of nighttime activities (plays, organization meetings, etc.) were at the same time as near-nightly faculty music concerts. Between ( ... )

I'm going to again throw the College of Notre Dame of Maryland (http://www.ndm.edu/) at you, if you don't mind nuns (hide the frosting!) and that weirdness that is an all-female college. The music department was really good, at least that I can vouch for. They have private instrument instruction if you wanted to keep on with your cello, and opportunities through other schools if you wanted to play with an orchestra yet. I know that a few of my classmates actually picked up a few sister classes through Julliard. It does cover your creative writing, music comp. Also would have a Latin/Classics (since hello, Catholic college), and a rather cool added bonus of a sister school in Japan where there is a constant flux of exchange students coming in, and the opportunity to go abroad to study there or any number of countries later on ( ... )
