Okay. So I have this old Beagle named Buddy, who was a stray and very likely always an outdoor and hunting dog. Anyone unfamiliar with Buddy can read my entries about him here if you so choose. Anyway, to make a long story short, it’s COLD outside, and that’s where Buddy stays. So far he seems to be doing well with his Dogloo filled with ( Read more... )

It might be time to invest in a kennel/crate. Keep him in that in a quiet room...(preferably closed off away from the other dogs) and explain the situation to your vet and ask for a sedative. I use acepromazine for my dogs at times. It's mild and should keep him calm.

AND you know I can't post here without telling you SPAY AND NEUTER!!!!

You are right. I don't know if I can get to the vet for a sedative before the weather gets bad tomorrow, but we will figure something out.

When I was growing up my dad always ran an extension cord with one of those heated light bulbs out to the dog house. That was their cold weather survival gear, along with tons of blankets and bedding.

Have you looked into discount programs through the SPCA for getting all the dogs fixed? I got both of mine done that way and it was literally $20 for the big one and free for the little one.

I'd still say get those hand and foot warmer packs that hunters use. No electricity=no risk of a fire.

And I'd call around to various vets about the spays and neuter. Explain the situation. If you have a good relationship with your current vet, they may be willing to work out a payment arrangement.

That really can't be ignored. A good friend from HS runs a rescue and foster group in Atlanta. She told a story about an email she got from one shelter director pleading for anyone to take some of their animals in as fosters. That shelter had 40 surrenders in one day. ONE DAY. And not a single cage for any of them. All 40 had to be put down because there was literally no place to put them. None. Nada. And the people still surrendered their animals knowing they'd be put to sleep because they themselves were hurting too much financially to hang onto them.
