Shortly after eight that evening, a knock came at the door. Mia adjusted the towel on her head and looked through the peephole. Tim Riggins.

She opened the door. Tim Riggins and a six pack of Shiner Bock. "Can I come in?"

Mia stepped back and waved him in. "Before Officer Friendly drives by and busts you."

He gave her a look that clearly said she didn't get it. "This is Texas."

"Does Billy know you're here?" She shut the door.

"Mia," Tim said matter of factly, "it's Saturday night, why would I be home? Billy knows I'm out. I'd only be home if I was sick. "

"Why didn't you call?"

"I did. I figured you were either out, or not answering, so I thought I'd swing by and see."

I must have been in the shower. "And if I wasn't in?"

He gave a little hitch of laughter. "It's Saturday night and I have beer. There's always a party somewhere."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because you are. Party's my second choice. Distant second." Pause. "It's not the same without Jason and Lyla, either." He sat on the couch, twisted the top off one of the beers, took a huge swallow and said, "There, now it'll be drinking and driving if you try and kick me out."

"How is it not the same without them?"

"Because ... most parties ended up with us in a corner of the back yard, or out by the fire, just talking and having a beer or two. And I'd watch Jason and Lyla dance, and ..." he chugged down more beer, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and gave a resigned sigh, "and those days are over. And," he gave her a direct look "you were right last time, we really haven't talked, we don't know each other like we should, so ...."

Mia laughed and said, "In your own way, sometimes you're just as big a dork as Landry."

She had meant the words to be a gentle tease, but when Tim spoke again, there was a note of hurt in his voice, "Is that all -- am I just a kid like Landry to you? Do I even have a chance of making you see ...?"

Oh honey, you think you're a man, you think you're so grown up, you think you've dealt with and lived through so much shit. You're young enough to think you know it all. And you're going to start finding out how damn much you don't know, and it's really going to suck. "It's complicated." She piffed air up to where her bangs would have been if they weren't under the towel, and sat down on the coffee table.

He leaned forward, setting his beer aside, and took her hands in his. "I think you make things more complicated than they are, sometimes."

"Tim, if word gets out --"

"Everybody will be like, 'Go Tim! Bagging that hot twentysomething!'"

"No they won't, I'll end up like that Mary Kay whatshername and lose my job."

He shook his head. "This is the Back End of Nowhere, Texas. Things are different out here." He leaned back, put his hands behind his head, causing his shirt to ride up -- God, he looked so damn good there ought to be a law -- and put his (boot clad) feet on either side of her, on the table. He looked at her through slitted eyes, daring her to make the next move.

"You just want sex," she said archly.

"I'm not going to lie, but I also want to make you happy, Mia. Because you were, for about 5 seconds afterwards, and … it was beautiful."

"You didn't call. You knew I'd let you in, that I wouldn't say no to you."

Heat flashed through those slitted eyes, making them look almost molten.

Mia stood, stepped over his legs, and started walking away. Dropping the towel from her wet hair, she turned and said, "Coming?"

She didn't make it far. With a thud, his feet flew off the table and slammed onto the floor. Startled, Mia shrieked when he swept her off her feet.

After a few steps, he faltered and came to a stop.

"Am I that heavy?" She giggled.

He gave her a look that said, "you're a mental patient". "No." Then huskily -- "Which door is it?"

Oh.

"Second on the left."
