7. Coffee

It was the rotten smell of week old garbage that lured Junsu to me. Maybe it was the sound of a cat meowing noisily as it licked that week old fish out of my hair. It was probably the latter, even if he always insists it is the former, his quirky nervous laugh a bad cover up. That day, I’ll never forget it, even if my memory is still a little foggy. He pulled me out of the garbage and hauled me through the backdoor of the café he ran, and he somehow managed to sway the cat to follow as well.

Junsu, my savior, placed me into a booth where only a little sunshine reached and set a coffee on the table. “I’m not sure how you like it, but no one has complained about my cappuccinos yet.” Coffee probably wasn’t the best thing for my busted up lip and bleeding teeth, but it really did taste good. The caffeine gave me the kick I needed to realize how much pain I was actually in.

God, I must have been beaten half to death.

“What exactly were you doing out in the trash? I mean, if that is your home, I’m sorry, they collect the garbage today.” He sort of just blabbed out without considering what was important, like medical attention. “I run this cat café right here. I just love cats.” His words were meaningless, so I stopped listening.

The cat that had been licking my hair had climbed into my lap and decided to take a nap. My feelings were similar, if only there was a bed somewhere.

“Sorry, but I have to leave. I probably have something to do,” I whispered into the mug. To be honest, I didn’t know where I was or what I had been doing the night before, but I knew what I’d be doing that night, just like every other night.

“Ohh, what is your job?” The problem is that this adorable man couldn’t take a hint.

“I run goods around, nothing big.” Though he remained silent and refilled my coffee cup, he must have known what I meant. He had me stay for two hours just playing with the cats and interacting with the other customers. Junsu didn’t even make me pay for my time or coffee when I finally stopped being too sore to move.

“Come back again tomorrow,” he begged me, his eyes as big as one of the cat’s.

It’s weird because I didn’t even know him and he’s a little peculiar. I welcomed the gesture, and even though I didn’t respond warmly, inside my heart I promised I would. He offered a gentle warmth to heal my cold wounds. Junsu opened his arms and practically invited me into his home and I was almost inclined to impose.

After I’d deliver my goods for the night I’d find myself still out at the crack of dawn, sometimes injured, sometimes not, but always dead tired and aching for a good rest. Instead of heading home I’d rush to the cat café and order a cappuccino. A cat licking the blood off fingers really relaxes a person.

Junsu would always say goodbye the same way. “Come back again tomorrow.”

There was one time when I didn’t come back in the morning. My night run ended with a broken leg and a trip the emergency room to remove some bullets from my shoulder and legs. I ended up staying a long grueling week in the hospital all alone. My room was on the first floor, and I witnessed a few funny incidents. There were a lot of parents rushing in because their child had gotten admitted into the hospital, or parents rushing in because their parents had gotten admitted into the hospital.

In one of my dreams a familiar squeaky voice asked a nurse for the room of a patient I might have known. “He is really tall and handsome, like, his eyes are tiny! My Yunho is like a stray cat, always getting into trouble and leaving every chance he gets, but he always comes back! His favorite coffee is cappuccino, but he’s starting to like my lattes. Please, his name is Jung Yunho and I last saw him on Tuesday!”

Except that wasn’t a dream, not really. Junsu really had been checking every hospital in the area to find out where I was. He was even calling the morgues.

The cat loving man was directed to my room eventually, and he collapsed on the side of my bed in tears. It’s odd for someone to feel so much care and affection for me when I barely treat myself right.

“When I say ‘come back again tomorrow’ I mean it! Do you know how scared I was?” His tears were as precious as the almond he used to sweeten my coffee.

His cheeks were wet and flushed, but so beautiful to kiss. I left soft kisses down his face, calming him down with each peck. “I know, I know, and I’m sorry.”

Somehow it all worked out. I stopped that job and moved in with Junsu, helping out at his cat café. Those cats aren’t the only ones bringing in business these days.

Rumor is that the coffee there is the best in the city.
