The name is super-old, yes -- it's based off Emma Donoghue's book Slammerkin, but I tacked on the "babe" because slammerkin was taken. I actually came to kind of hate the handle about a year after I picked it (it was way back in 2002), but for a long time I was a poor student and couldn't spare the cash for a rename token. Finally I did buy one and then I froze: LJ had been such a part of my life for so long, it had helped me shape a lot of my sense of identity, and it had all been under the handle slammerkinbabe. Changing it just didn't feel right. I wound up giving the rename token away. Odd.
Thank YOU, sweetie. That was an important piece -- I wasn't kidding about the New Yorker. It is THAT quality! You're in Manhattan -- I can't pretend to tell you how to do it, but you ought to try to get it republished someplace really significant.
