I agree with you: some famous artworks are notable only as benchmarks of public taste. My impression is that , before its restoration, this work was darker, and people liked it that way.

The museum's explicatory offerings (which are in general excellent) see other good reasons for the high regard in which the painting is held. They point out the leader of the militia group in Night Watch actively addresses his guys; Rembrandt's portrayal -- contrary to most such artworks -- captures this lively mood.
