A 'gouster' is apparently old-fashioned American street slang for a jive talking, sharply dressed, streetwise black dude. The version of The Gouster that is being re-released includes tracks that he dropped from the original release of the record, so in some ways it's a new album. I'm not sure about forking out a wad of cash for a 12 CD box set, but getting what is, in effect, almost a new Bowie album from the '70s...It's terribly tempting.

"Gouster was a word unfamiliar to me, but David knew it as a type of dress code worn by African-American teens in the Sixties in Chicago," Visconti explains in the excerpt. "But in the context of the album its meaning was attitude, an attitude of pride and hipness. Of all the songs we cut, we were enamored of the ones we chose for the album that portrayed this attitude."
