Well, they sold a Reinhardt at Christie's about four years ago and it went for about $116,000, which was about twice what they were expecting. Maybe his profile is due to rise. Then again, one of the things about art and especially abstract is that it takes time for the viewer to fully appreciate a piece of art, and nowadays everything is about instant gratification. "Okay, now look! Did you enjoy it?" "Errrmmm..." "Never mind! On to the next one..."
I suspect you are right about the art market -- no sense of history, no depth. And the gratification problem affects much more than the art scene, goddess knows!
I saw the Reinhardt and, though I don't know his work really well, do enjoy "abstract field" stuff (as I think it's called).
