I read up about this, and apparently this is from her 'Dark Angel' period, with S&M trappings much in evidence. If she appeared with a man in these pictures she risked an obscenity conviction, so the lesbian aspect was played up. But, like you said, it's sort of suggestive without it being obvious what is going on. It's a very....erm...striking picture, isn't it?

True. And fascinating, given that Bettie reportedly was straight -- and even a bit prudish. You're right about a model seeming to be lesbian, back in the 50s; it had a certain level of acceptability (the "Dark Angel" appeal)...
