The fanwank thing is interesting. Amongst Doctor Who fans it normally refers to the sort of fiction written by fans where all the loose threads in storylines from over the years are tied up by the writer, or characters who never met in the television show meet up. In the 90s there were some officially produced books by Virgin and later BBC Books. These were often written by fans turned pro-writers, and certain authors were notorious for mentioning some obscure reference from years back in the show and making a whole book from it. They knew that other fans would almost certainly get the reference, and hence the suggestion that it was a case of fans 'wanking off' other fans, but leaving the average reader simply puzzled.

Dear Flame:

Whoa! A whole new sense of what gets said about... well, garbage! That use of "wank" may be more British -- at least I suspect it's not related to the fandom/blogging that Urban Dictionary (and Annie) had in view.

The whole fandom thing is a "world apart" -- and I hadn't known much about it until I came to know a few LJers who write fanfic. And, Gary, I didn't QUITE connect the Dr. Who fan-verse to the broad world of fandoms. So that adds a bit to my still- vague sense of how it originated, in infra-dig terms...

Thanks!
