Sometime in the past few decades, the Europeans have picked up Halloween as a holiday, but they do it with their own weird twists. I was in Orange, France, one Halloween, and after school, little children dressed up in costumes and went door-to-door to the local stores and put out their little hands, palm up, toward each shopkeeper, demanding a treat. They did not say "trick or treat" nor anything at all, in any language. The shopkeepers all had little bowls of candy to treat the children. It was weird.
Never been to Orange, but I've been to Tangier! (Sorry, just got inspired...) I do love all things francais!
I've lived in Europe on several occasions, but it was a while back (1980s); I do get back on visits nowadays, but not at the end of October. It is funny, though, how some of our customs have gone "worldwide"...
Oh, well, we rip off their Oktoberfest, Cinco de Mayo, and Carnaval; only fair for them to take over what they want of our Halloween and Christmas traditions.
I've been to Orange, and worked in France a few times. I've seen glimmers of Halloween there, but nothing to speak of. We go in for it slightly more in UK, but maybe less so than 10-20yrs ago. I only half went in for it once or twice as a kid. It's always rainy and cold in October, plus the neighbours all pretend to be out so the 'trick or treat' pickings are slim.
I had to 'get in the Halloween mood' a bit earlier this year in SL because the majority, being US players, would want their Halloween outfits before the date and I had to prepare the outfit & billboard in time.
U.S. teenagers seem to find it a kick, sometimes wearing quite sexy outfits -- which is a bit disconcerting if you answer the doorbell and are expecting 6-year-olds!
Interesting that it's a big deal on SL -- where sexy outfits are the rule...
