No, you're reading the quote wrong. Read it as "[The term] 'family' focus-groups [verb, as in "receives better feedback from focus groups"] a lot better than [the term] 'patriarchal kleptocracy with theocratic overtones," and it's generally in relation to names of groups like "Family Research Council" or "Focus on the Patriarchy Family." And so on. It has nothing to do with any particular religion, although the worst offenders are usually evangelical Christians.
Hi, "Real" (hey, you NEED a cool, short nickname) --
Actually I did read it in the sense you suggest. -- but failed at making your point about the quote from "Alicubi"...
So, hastily, I altered my ellipsis "[are]" to "[sounds]" and it works better.
But I appreciate your thought that it applies to evangelical Christians. not the mackerel-snappers. (And I checked Wiki, which corrected my spelling of "mackerel" and said it was "once a sectarian slur" -- which is how I intended it!)
BTW I just did a SECOND post from Alicubi -- who seems a fab blogger!
Well, IMO, if you find an organisation dedicated to basically eradicating women like us (whatever that entails, as I realise we have some non-overlap), with the word "Family" in their name, yeah, they're going to be either funnymentalist Xtians or mackerel-snappers. Yes, that is an archaic sectarian slur, refers to (I believe) the possibly-outdated mandate for Catholics to eat fish on Fridays.
And, yes, that what it refers to -- the fish thing was particularly perverse in the Middle Ages, as the cable series, "The Borgias," makes quite clear...
