So, like is this normal in the UK? Cause it seems like it would be totally illegal to just search thousands of safety deposit boxes "just cause we want to."

I would normally say that you should get one in Switzerland but 1. It's kind of a long way to go.
2. Not even that is safe anymore.

According to the article, they went judge-shopping until they found one that would sign the warrant. Entirely possible to happen here.

US police often seize large amounts of money found on people, based on drug-forfeiture laws. They can take the money and you have to prove that you got it legally before you can have it back, after a nice metric fuckton of legal bills.

Since the local police department gets to keep the cash automatically, without any judge being involved, it's very popular.

Ironically we reached this point in large part because government has been pandering to the kind of folks who read the daily mail (famed for its scare stories about how the country is overrun with criminals).
