so much to tell! i've been traveling in new england for six days and only just returned home last night. this morning, i had to take my car into the shop to get the breaks looked at (my wallet is sobbing) and i've only now just settled down to work, but before work, i feel i owe some kind of narrative. it will not be complete and the details will, ( Read more... )

so glad you had such a good time. your people are good people. welcome back to chicago, which, judging by the weather, has temporarily been annexed to kentucky. i'm spending much of the week in monkish working mode, but hopefully we can catch up some time soon.
xoxo,
sk

welcome back. sounds like an excellent time. i haven't been to new haven since college when i visited a friend there, and all i remember about it was a) a toasting session at maury's, and b) the famous ernie who worked at the yale taco bell who was something of a legend in his time, and c) camille paglia at the yale debate/political session. all the undergrads seemed pretty miserable, though i was taken with the whole private school architecture and whatnot, coming from a public university and all ( ... )

dude! you so weren't supposed to tell me who won! i've been waiting with abated breath. i mean i kind of knew who was going to win, but still.

also, i hate to ruin it for you, but man v. wild, has been discredited. i mean, most everything is real (cracking open dried elephant dung for water, running over the molten magma with his shoes singing, and drinking his own urine to stay alive in the desert) but sometimes bear sleeps in a hotel and has his camera crew pre-assemble the rafts that carry him over the deadly rapids. i know, it's like santa clause all over again. ST and i used to be addicted, devoted. now,we can hardly watch. so sad.

and there's no alternative either. the other survival show on that channel--survirorman-- is very, very boring. apparently, the way survival actually is. bummer.

anyhow, enjoy the rest of your time in front of the cable and pour a finger of whiskey for me! i hope to see you soon -- i'm sure one thing or another will bring me over your way before too long.

ah, crap, sorry to ruin next iron chef for ya! but yeah, simon was pegged from the beginning. the other guy was just too gosh-darn-golly to make it on the show.

i had read the stories about the fakery on man v wild. but i'd never watched the show before the scandal, so i guess that helped. i'm still able to suspend disbelief (?) just enough... and now, they don't really seem to make any bones about it - bear magically cleans up in between segments, and says things like "if i was going to stay here tonight, this is what i'd do." which isn't nearly as cool, i'll grant you.
