Silence swelled around Nikki as Ian's breath slowed and returned to stealth, making her own heartbeat loud in her ears. She listened, knowing he'd tease her if she broke it first.

"Mmm.... Very nice..." Ian finally rumbled, stretching against the cooling sheets.

She watched him, unable to suppress a delighted grin. "I'll raise your 'very nice' to a 'damn, you're good.'"

"I try." He plucked a strand of sticky hair off her face and stretched it out to its length before letting it spring back, the curly lock threatening to plaster itself to her cheek again.

"I was thinking earlier... About when I first saw you?" Shifting to rearrange the sheets allowed her gaze slide away from his. "There was no way in hell I could have imagined us winding up together."

He said nothing for so long that she had to meet his eyes again. "Oh? What was it you thought when you first saw me that gave you that idea?"

She groaned inwardly - he'd gleefully make her squirm, since she'd given him an opening. "I'll tell you what I thought of you if you tell me what you thought of me."

"Deal."

"So when you came to work on that diamond case? You were way too Mister Iceman, dissing me for being a newbie. I figured you wouldn't be caught dead with a rookie." She cocked her head at him. "So what did you think when you saw me at the office?"

"Actually, that's not the first time I saw you."

"Oh really?" She made a show of propping herself on an elbow so she could watch and listen to the tale he was teasing her with. "Now you really have to spill, Mr. Secret Agent Man. You been holding out on me."

Ian took the opportunity to slide his eyes down to her cleavage peeking from the sheet before meeting her eyes again. "That's Special Agent to you," he drawled, "but you seem to have conveniently forgotten: I work out of Quantico and every agent goes through there when they start with the Bureau."

Nikki flushed, trusting her coloring to hide it from even Ian's laser sharp vision. If she was cocky now she was far worse at the Academy all brash hot shot with her LAPD street cred that meant little to nothing to the seasoned agents teaching the courses.

"But you were never my teacher," she countered. "Because I'd have remembered you."

"No," Ian admitted. "I'd been off on assignment and had to have Agent Teller take over my sharpshooting sessions. I came back during and strolled through the range, checking out the recruits."

"And you checked me out?" Nikki huffed. "What was I wearing tight jeans that day and I happened to bend over as you walked by?"

Ian pinned her so fast the breath was almost knocked out of her, his speed made her dizzy and his power over her even dizzier. Head spinning, she found she couldn't speak and had to wait for Ian to break the quiet between them.

He did, lowering his mouth to her ear, brushing his lips against it, breath warm on her skin.

"It's not always about sex," he breathed. He loosened his hold on her, but stayed hovering over her, meeting her gaze. "You were arguing with Teller, even though he was your instructor. I'm not even sure what you were going on about - and you were probably wrong…" Nikki let out a disgruntled noise, but Ian continued. "But you were so damn fiery… You didn't back down for one second. That's what made me remember you. That fire…"

As he let her up, moving to lie back down beside her, she took advantage of the shift to straddle him - not able to pin him by any stretch of the imagination, but she asserted herself enough he let out a little chuckle at her boldness.

"So, if I'm fiery does that mean you can handle another round without getting burned?" she taunted.

He grasped her hips abruptly, a wolfish grin on his face.

"Flame on…"
