GIFT GIVING between Germany and the USA

Oct 25, 2007 12:52

I will be travelling on the transatlantic route again this December and will need to bring presents on both ends. I thought this is a good place to start my gift planning and ask your opinions -- we can keep it in the group for future reference.
Thanks in advance for any ideas! :)

I'd have to say that the best souvenir from Germany, would be a German. Especially if he has brown curly hair. woof. I'm trying to figure out how to pack one in my luggage when I return.

:-))))

Otherwise, I'm going to grab some cheezy useless East German products from the Ost-hotel store in Berlin. Maybe a telephone :-))))

I'm an American student of German so I probably am a little bit more geeky about what I like than some other people might be. However, if you have American friends whom you know like Germany and German culture I find we often get excited by things that are familiar to us... only in GERMAN ( ... )

Ahhh fruitcake.... arielography October 25 2007, 21:03:43 UTC

I love hearing the stories of how families 'regift' the fruitcake year after year to each other, and finally the thing is 18 years old and crumbling at the edges before they finally replace it.....

Kitchen witches!

I thought my family were the only folks with witches in their kitchens. Are they something traditionally German? My family has no ties to Germany, but we've always had a witch in the kitchen and I now have one in my own kitchen (actually, it's a witch I bought in Germany, but was associated with local legend, not with kitchens as far as I know).

Tell me more, I'm intrigued.

Chocolate is always awesome. Especially in German wrappers.

A Dirndl... either a purple one or a red one. :P

Or if they have replica castles that would be pretty for my collection. I don't remember what it was called, but that one castle that inspired the disneyland castle would be especially cool :)
