Haha well to be honest my roots are from the north (my grandmother comes from Bremerhaven) but I really do like the south. Nothing against the north though!
The German exchange students have told me that the best schools in Germany are in Baden-Wurttemberg and the south. My school has a program with University of Tubingen.
Being in Ludwigshafen which is just across the Rhine from Mannheim, I just have to vote for Mannheim. I haven't studied there, so I can't say anything about the programs there, but the city is very nice (has for example a lot of art nouveau buildings), has a unique map and the weather is definitely warmer than in any of those other cities. It's only one hour to Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Kaiserslautern and public transportation is great, so you can get everywhere easily. A lot of the university is located in those old buildings (the main part is located at the castle). The people are nice - even though they tend to speak in a funny dialect. But none of the cities you've listed is dialect-free and there are worse on your list than the Mannheimer one. :)
My choices would be Köln and Hamburg, I know they are not on your list, but I guess Hamburg, because I am originally from ther north and because it's an awesome city and Köln because I study there, granted, the university isn't the best, but the city is amazing and it's really easy to meet new people there. And Köln has a great Studentenkultur, many parks and is just generally a place to enjoy life at
( ... )
But Düsseldorf is close to Köln, which is important. My husband used to work at Uni Köln and is very glad he's moved on from there, even though we miss the city itself.
Haha, yeah, but loving Köln, I just cannot recommend Düsseldorf, it's silly, but something in me cringes at the thought.
I've been living in Cologne for four years and loved every single one of them. I live really close to the city centre and everything about the city is just LOVE to me. I agree on the Uni not being the best, but apparently the language courses for foreign exchange students are first class!
Can you imagine how much shit I got for moving from Cologne (also after 4 years!) to Düsseldorf?! I'm actually quite happy here at the end of the day, but my heart will always be in Cologne.
One of my German friends studied in Bielefeld and foound the town really boring. Düsseldorf isn't bad, it's near interesting places like Cologne and Neanderthal and there is the craziness of Karnival.
Lots of people on my German course went to Tübingen and seemed to enjoy it. Plenty of internatioal students there I suspect.

But I don't think there are too many Americans at the university. And it's still up to you to chose your friends, isn't it?

Düsseldorf seems to be rising on my list as well as Tübingen. Thank you for the advice!
