I would say it's more of an 80's/90's thing. Doppelnamen were quite popular for a while; I don't know in how much this is still the case. I don't have stats at hand or time to dig them up right now but I haven't seen much of it in recent years.

Thank you very much for the information :D I was just wondering as I've never really seen any such as on TV credits etc... I don't know why the question popped into my head *laughs*

Men that take their wife's name, like our friend Mr. Landers, formerly Mr. Hirsch. *wink*

Ha ha! I remember reading in my big Feeling B book about him taking his wife's name and he thought his name was crap XD

I've never known a man to take his wife's name. Especially here. Men here probably think they're less of a man if they did something like that ;D

My German ex-boyfriend said he'd take my last name if we ever married, but I think it was just because he hated his father so much.

I was just about to say that -- and not to mention our Mr Kruspe, who went so far as to call himself Kruspe Bernstein for a while there.

I think they were more popular when it was first allowed to keep your own name and just add the name of your husband.

Even though I was never married, I know that I will keep my own name, no additions, no chances, should I ever get into that situation. ;)

MY host mother did the hyphenated name thing---she was married in 1980.

It does seem to be an 80's and 90's thing, which is something I didn't know :D There seems to be something about those decades *laughs*

One of my German co-workers, when he got married, added his wife's name, so he was W. Krenzer-Klee, and his wife was G. Klee-Krenzer. (This was around 1988, I believe.)

Then they got divorced. So he went back to W. Krenzer.

I don't know how I would feel at the thought of losing my surname. My mother took only my father's name when they married and although they divorced, she still used his name for many years before reverting back to her own. The whole idea is scary to me, even though at 23 I should be considering settling down XD
