I had no clue what you were saying in your reply to me earlier today about kids on Myspace and movies. Now I know...
The funny thing is: As I was reading I was like, "These are all from the past seven years! Where's all the older stuff?" Then I got to your rant. True, Where's Citizen Kane, Casablanca, The Rocky series, Apocalypse Now, The Godfather series, Breathless, Kiss Me Deadly, the Marx brothers, Psycho, Mae West films, The Blues Brothers, Abbott and Costello films, To Have or Have Not, Easy Rider, Five Easy Pieces, The Wild Bunch, Spartacus, The 400 Blows, Jules and Jim, et cetera.
In regards to your responses: How could YOU of all people not have gone back and rewatched Sideways to catch the whole thing? Of all movies I could possibly think of that would appeal to you Ms. Wine-enthusiast, how did you skip out on that one? And you've never seen Team America!? Another shocker.
I scored 32. In further blasphemy, I've seen only 4 of the 6 Star Wars movies, and I fell asleep during the first one.
Sooner or later I'll come down with some debilitating disease that forces me to lay in bed all day. Until then, why waste my time on low-grade pop culture?
Maybe someone needs to make an adult (not XXX, although that would be funny too) version of this poll?
SW is hardly low-grade pop culture. I'm serious. In fact many of my film degree papers and course proposals I've written can explain much more eloquently than I can in short. But amongst many film scholars they are extensively written about due to their resonance with Campbellian mythology and Jungian archetypes.
There's an excellent documentary out called The Mythology of 'Star Wars', which explores how tightly and deftly interwoven all these themes are within and between the entire six-part cycle.
Sure the films have also had resonance with the broad public not consciously aware of such matters due to their groundbreaking special effects, which is all most people seem to expect out of them on surface, but if they look deeper and expect more from a typical summer blockbuster then they'd find a lifetime of reward.
It wasn't my intention to lump Star Wars in with the lesser films on that list. I should disclaim up front that I'm not a very visually-oriented person, so probably I have no place commenting on films, which rarely impress me.
I've been a student of myth much of my life and can recognize the themes; I just didn't find the story or the characters terribly compelling.
