The room was lined on either side by wooden shelves lined neatly with books. Numerous books, from various corners of the earth each stood side by side alphabetically arranged by their owner. She was meticulous about such things after all. The shelves surrounded a large table made of some exotic wood which the owner thought pretty and sturdy enough to sit at and read.
The question arose, did she travel all over the world to acquire these items? Absolutely not, the availability of all that she needed on a wonderful thing known as the internet kept her from even having to step outside from her house. She didn’t want to leave her co-inhabitant, not even for a second; and the world around her made it only easier for her to stay in and never go out. Everything came right to her doorstep. Just like he did.
He is beautiful in all ways, his pale skin glows like the moon reflecting the sun’s rays. His face is inconsistent; it changes like the seasons but it was always perfect in her eyes. Placid, forgiving, and tender: his eyes are a deep chocolate brown and full of wisdom. His dark hair fell slightly over his forehead as he constantly swept it back just to peer back into the door he was reading. He kept changing his appearance, but all in all, he remain the same at heart.
His voice is sinful, it commands her to look at him, entices her to join him wherever he is and she doesn’t mind even one bit. The constant phone calls, the wrinkles that seem to appear on her face and the fatigue that takes over her body reminds her of the fact that she is no longer young and her mother never lets her forget - she needs to get married. But he stood there silently, reminding her that he would always be there and she could just forget the world and live with him. So she did.
She gazed at him as he sat across the table with a personal set of books, piled before him, devouring one after the other. Her fingers twirled around the card she used as her book-mark. His gaze lifted from the book and the deep brown orbs met hers. They twinkled and his lips quirked up sending her a knee-weakening smile before returning to his book, his knuckles clenching around the hard-bound novel with golden letters printed on it.
He had come at her most desperate time. It had been four years since the harassing had begun on part of her mother driving her up the walls with incessant phone calls pestering her to find a man and settle down. She wondered why she even needed to be bound by the ties of matrimony when her degrees spoke for themselves. Four years of torment, emotional blackmail and other such unnecessary things broke her. She wanted to take the easy way out.
Memories of her trying to slip the white pills past her lips filled her mind’s eye. The cold, damp tiles of the bathroom she slid down, the tear stained cheeks which were hers and the bitterness that swept across her taste buds along with her heart. He had appeared then, panting and panicking, pulling her up from the floor and forcing the capsules out of her mouth. One look into his eyes and she knew she was saved.
The calls continued though, even after she convinced her mother that she had someone to keep her safe. They continued for ten years and then stopped, until they began again and have gone for as long as she can remember. But he has always been there, standing by her.
He smells mildly of after-shave, mint and old books. Everything she deems godly. His fingers are thin and long as they thread through her curls every evening, his arms strong, to lift her high enough to pick up a book from the top of a shelf but gentle to wrap around her every night as they slumber. He’s always dressed in black slacks and a white shirt. His gait is majestic as he strolls about her house as if he owns it. After all, he was Aiden and all that she owned, belongs equally to him.
Her thoughts were broken when the phone rang shrilly through the house. The sound made the two readers perk up and the sound of scraping chairs joined the cacophony of the ringing. She made her way towards the phone trembling as the familiar and comforting scent followed her. Placing her hand on the cold receiver, she pressed it to her ear only to hear the usual jibe from her mother. Her hands shook as tears threatened to flood out of her eyes and down her cheeks. Aiden only placed his hand on her shoulder and nodded calmly as she repeated to her mother the mantra she had said every call.
“Mamma, I have settled down with a man named Aiden, he is all that I need”
She set the phone down and looked at the smiling man before her, beckoning her into his embrace. Two warm arms wrapped themselves around her and words of comfort were whispered to her. She melted into it and declared that she wished to sleep. He led her to the bedroom and the two cocooned themselves in the sheets basking the comfort and love for each other. Her eyes closed slowly as he disappeared from her vision. Sleep had taken over her mind instead.
A pile of letters sat at the doorstep; all addressed to her with different messages. The topmost was a letter inviting her to the fifth anniversary of her mother’s death. The next few were unpaid bills, loans and other such financial receipts. Unimportant letters and letters from her mother forgiving her and letting her live as she is.
Aiden on the other hand appeared only when she awoke and disappeared when she slept.
She loved him with all her soul.
