Four Merlin recs: gen, modern AU and canon-era AU

I'm having a hell of a week, and it's only Tuesday. So the last couple days, I've come home from work, hunkered down on the couch with tea, and have read my eyeballs off, following Tumblr and delicious and ff.net Merlin recs. On the heels of that, please have some recs: 2 gen, 1 modern AU, and 1 M/A canon-era AU.

Hey, if you're reading modern AUs now, does that mean you've read The Student Prince? It is still one of my favorite things in fandom, despite me not being in Merlin fandom at all.

(Cannot remember if you mentioned or not, sorry!)

I started it, but it turned out (somewhat predictably) not to be my thing. Too little of what I read fanfic for (canon relationships and recognizable character grace notes), too much of stuff I don't care about. I know, I'm a strange bird.

Awww, sad. I suppose that stuff didn't bother me because I don't know canon, although IDK, it might also have gotten a slow start because a lot of the beginning was scene-setting.

I think it's really just a preference thing for me, because huge swaths of fandom love this story, and stories like it. I'm just personally not fond of fan fiction that feels to me like the author probably should have written an original novel, because it's that far off the mark of the source. It might be excellent, entertaining fiction, and often is, but to me it's not fan fiction. I just have a certain particular set of things I want from fanfic, and that sort of story doesn't match the mark. (Not a huge fan of the scene-setting or world-building; the shortcuts of fanfic are part of what I like about it.)

Yay for Merlin fic recs. I love Gigi's fic and I've already got "Daughter of Erebus" on my Kindle to read but I will definitely check out the others.

Plus, plot! I love plot!

I think plot is my major kink :)

I'll definitely be checking out the other ones. I feel like I haven't had any Merlin fic to read in a while, well, any good fic, so the recs are most welcomed.
