Jimmy thought he heard the door open in the next room and, thinking his father was (finally) home from work, abandoned his homework and rushed toward the door. A moment later the ten-year-old boy stumbles to a halt in the lobby, looking around in confusion and rising panic. "Dad?" He skitters backward and looks back the way he came, but his ( Read more... )

Gordon wasn't in the room but he was fortunately nearby, and after a moment's shock he went running toward the familiar little voice. "Jimmy!"

"Dad!" Gordon caught his son in a tight hug, which the boy enthusiastically returned. At least one of his kids was the right age.

And observe a big little sister walking by and stopping dead still.

"Oh. Wow."

He looks up at her confusedly, not recognizing her. "Who're you?"

"Well, you're probably not going to believe this, but... I'm your little sister."

That gets a very serious little frown. "You can't be my little sister, she's...little." He holds a hand to about Babs's height as he remembers it.

Batman is lurking in the shadows -- it's what he does best, really, and steps forward when he hears Jimmy's voice. "Your dad's here. Don't worry."

The growing fear is abruptly replaced by awe. "...Batman!" There's a slow grin, but he doesn't exactly know what to say.. "...Hi."

"Hi, kid." It's kind of gruff, but a little fond all the same. "Doing alright?"

He nods. "Uh huh. ...We've seen you on the news. Mom always changes the channel, though. Do we really have to keep letting everyone think you're a murderer? You're not!" He's been troubled like this since that night.

Oh, geez. Bruce stops and watches the kid, feeling a bit bad. He can only imagine what it would be like ...

"Hey." He clears his throat, running a hand through his hair and walking over. He moves carefully, not wanting to the scare the boy. "Hey, it's okay. You're okay." Bruce hopes at least someone the boy knows is around.

The boy watches him with definite wariness, backing away a bit. "Who're you?"

Bruce stops walking and stays where he is, in case moving forward more alarms the kid.

"I'm Bruce. I'm a scientist."

"Oh." He doesn't offer any personal information. Recent events aside, he's from Gotham, kids grow up cautious there. "Where is this?"

Fear, Jon thinks, has such a distinctive ring to it, and it's one he can very rarely ignore. So naturally he stops upon hearing the boys voice, and a slow smile comes to his face. He's never had much time for children - they're simply not complex or challenging enough for him. Sometimes you just have to mix up your routine a little.

"I don't know if they're here," he says as he steps into the lobby. On his face is a concerned look, not at all genuine but believable.

And this one has plenty to play with to make it fun for him. Jimmy watches him warily, distrustful. "Where's here?"

"Here? Here is Nowhere." He takes a step closer. "Kind of like a fairy tale. One of the old, nightmare-like ones." A grin. "Boo."

Jimmy takes a couple steps backwards. "Can't be nowhere, that doesn't make any sense." He glances around for a door and starts towards one, meaning to get outside. Maybe he can flag down a cop car and they can call his father.
