A man and his turtle.

Apr 13, 2007 21:06

Stanley Raymond Kowalski had been scarce lately, and had decided to remedy this by bringing his pot of coffee, mug of Smarties, and his turtle Benny into the lobby to sit and read for a while. No use being cooped up in your room all the time, right?

Jenny had decided to do a bit of exploring. After poking around in various places and not finding much of interest, she made her way back to the lobby.

"Oh, hello," she said. He seemed nice, at any rate. "What are you reading?"

"Oh -- hey there." He glanced at the title, "Oliver Twist. I dunno, I just grabbed it off the shelf in my room. This Dickins ain't a bad writer."

She shook her head, amused. "A bit wordy, I always thought."

"Yeah, it's kinda long," he shrugged. "Ray Kowalski, by the way. I uh, don't think I've seen you around here before."

Gloria still had no clue of what to make of this place, but she had managed to figure at least the basics out and, since she no longer felt the need to jump at every tiny sound, so she decided that getting out of her room would be good for her. She looked a little relieved that she did not recognize the man in the lobby, and if he looked up, she smiled.

Two pretty women in one day? Ray was impressed. "Hey -- are you new here too?"

"I am." She hesitated a moment, before recovering and holding out her hand with another smile. "I'm Gloria Nathan."

"Ray Kowalkski. Good to meet you, Gloria. Uh -- " Ray took his feet off the couch, "You wanna sit? Benny doesn't bite."

Ray grinned and gave the fish bowl an affectionate pat, "He is, isn't he?"

Here's a Fraser, producing a handy bit of lettuce for Benny from who-knows-where as he sits down.

"Hello, Ray."

"Hey, Frase," Ray smiled as Benny happily gobbled up the leaf. "Where you been hidin'?"

"The consistently fine weather prompted me to camp along the shoreline whilst I explored it." Sure enough, he's out of uniform, deeply tanned and unshaven. "It does not seem to lead anywhere, oddly enough."

And sure enough, Ray was boggling a little, "I can ah -- see that. That you were outside a bit. You have fun?" The second part made him stop and think, "Wait -- nowhere? It leads nowhere?"

"Is that a turtle?" It's curiosity that draws Harriet over, and she smiles down at the reptile even as she asks. It's all a bit surreal. She glances at Ray and adds, with a curt nod, "Hello, young man."

"He is, indeed, a turtle, yes." He set his book down and nodded back, "Hiya."

"Harriet Jones, Prime Minister," she supplies, without the ID card for once. "Cute turtle."

"Prime Minister -- really?" Ray sat up straighter, blinking and kind of wondering if he should salute. "Of... Canada?" If they were in Canada, maybe Fraser could get them out of here.
