"Oh, a few." He blinks. "What's this 'Yom Kippur'?"

It's one of the most important Jewish holidays! We fast, and ask God to forgive us for our sins and inscribe us in the Book of Life.

"Ah. I'd never heard of it. Sounds interesting."

Well, are you going to tell us what it is? *grins* Only if you want to, of course.

*smiles back at her, the soft trustworthy sort of smile he's always been able to smile, no matter what the other circumstances are* I've lost the trust of someone I care for very much.

Oh, that's terrible! Is there anything you can do about it?

*with a small smile* I'm Catholic: there's always something I'm sorry for.

But Catholics can have a Yom Kippur whenever they want, can't they?

*a bit confused* I suppose. We have to confess a lot, if that's what you mean.

I'd just as soon not get into it, really.

I'm sorry for -- everything. Everything.

*--just for, for letting it be known, there's a little basket of red apples left by Haynes' bedside. he and Percy haven't crossed paths lately, but that doesn't mean Percy's forgotten his roommate. the apples are the roundest ones from the crop, the ones with the fewest wasp holes possible (it's impossible not to have some wasp holes, but there are as few as he could manage)*

*when he sees Percy next he'll smile (his smiles are always hesitant, as if he's waiting for permission, but they're sincere, more and more) in thanks, and maybe manage a few words to the same effect, if it's a good day -- he's always afraid of speaking too much*

*Percy will smile back, don't doubt it for a moment, and won't mind either way, won't mind*
