I'm from Cyteen, on the Union side of the line. Cat, too.

Well. Sol under the Earth Company sent out the first interstellar ships. They built the first 8 space stations. Then extraterrestrial life was discovered on Pell.

This changed the balance of trade. Sol was no longer main beneficiary of the work done on the stations. More stations were established beyond Pell. Then non-sentient life was discovered on Cyteen.

The tension that had been brewing with Sol and the Beyond exploded once the jumpdrive was discovered. Cyteen declared independance from the Earth Company and formed Union. They in turn sent out warships to bring them back into line. The war finally ended at Pell, when the merchanters formed the Alliance.

Union's focus is on science and exploration and making things better for people. Alliance's focus is on trade and economics.
