Kavi Chernevog, troubled Kavi Chernevog, rash Kavi Chernevog, is regretting his rash decision to frighten Pyetr Kochevikov by near-killing his English woman--when he was setting about it, when he was taking her strength from her slowly, it seemed to him a good plan, at least one that would damage Pyetr Ilitch and show him that he, Kavi Chernevog, ( Read more... )

ros doesn't like the dark. it reminds him of something he doesn't (can't) remember, of places where the light won't touch, of reaching out and getting nowhere (and you'd be in there forever, wouldn't you?) and -- he doesn't like it. or at least, he doesn't like being left by himself in it, not if he's going to be like that ... if he were thinking something cheerier, that might be all right. but he's by himself, thinking dark thoughts, and the halls are so long when you can't see the other side of them. he may be whimpering.

he doesn't like this at all.

"Easy." Mickle puts a hand on his shoulder and grins at him in the darkness.

Dinadan is a knight, which naturally implies some form of physical ability. Which is how one knows that when the mansion was suddenly plunged into darkness and Dinadan walked into a lamp, tripped over a footstool, and is now lying the ground next to it, that all of this was entirely intentional. Obviously.

It is Dog who finds him, not Florian--Florian is feeling his way around much more slowly, as his night vision is not amazing, whereas Dog is doing fine. He's snuffling around at Florian's feet, and when he smells Dinadan he sits on him, his paws folded neatly on Dinadan's back.

"Oh, good God," Dinadan says, trying to shift just enough to get the dog off.

Dog pants at him contentedly, his long tongue lolling out between his teeth.

"Dog?" Florian says sharply.

Courfeyrac is reading in his room when the lights die. He jumps, dropping the book, and fumbles after the light-switch -- he still hasn't quite figured out how they work; maybe he did something to them, maybe it's fixable --

Candles and the means to light them, if they're in the room at all, are nowhere he knows to look, and in any case he's not thinking clearly at the moment, not at all.

Oh, not again, is Sagramore's basic reaction, as he stops halfway to Courfeyrac's room to eye the fading lights, indoors and out. Wasn't it just noon? He's losing track of time.

Ah, well. It's not as if there's really anything lost by lost time. He continues on his way, and raps on Courfeyrac's door lightly. "Aimery, it's me."

There's a stifled cry, before he even finishes the sentence. Then, after a pause, shakily, "Sir?"

"Jesu, of course. Are you all right?"

This is one thing that Dr. Hoenikker can manage not to be completely oblivious to. But he sits quite still, observing it as if he might be able to observe the darkness itself. An occasional murmur ("Oh my, that's..." "How fascinating!" etc.) sounds from his position, until finally he announces, quite loudly though absently, "Perhaps the theory of black air is valid...!"

because dr. hoenikker is his friend, sort of, and he does need someone to talk to, ros calls out, tentatively, "which one is that?"

Because Dr. Hoenikker will answer any question put to him that he manages to hear, and maybe because he remembers Ros's voice, he calls back not-so-tentatively, "The one by which night is caused by the accumulation of black air. It is said to be created by industrial practices, and to be quite suffocating. it's supposed to be quite combustible... If I had a match, I could test it!" He doesn't even consider that, if it were all true, that would kill them all including him.

"but all the candles've gone out. can you light anything, all the black air's put everything out?"
