Iris frees her eyes from their squint when she realizes that she's not walked out into the sun like she thought.  She looks about her, pushing her limp hair away from her face.  There's no panic in her mind, just wonder and amazement at something clearly magical.  She takes a few steps forward, expecting to see someone but not expecting them to see

Here's Melchior, probably on his way to the library, passing by and giving her a smile. "Hello! Are you new?"

Oh! She curtsies quickly, because it's what she's been taught to do (even if she still dresses rather plain, despite the help Clara has given with money),

"Yes, I am, I guess."

He blinks a little and offers a mildly awkward bow, since she curtsied. "Well, you've found yourself in the Mansion. It's a nice place."

"A mansion?" She looks around more, because she's good at looking. "I've been in large houses before, but never a mansion."

"Good lady. Are you newly come here?"

She pulls back, maybe bowing her head slightly upon being called a lady.

"Yes. Yes, I think I am."

"May I then offer you food or drink, or a place to sit?"

"Oh." She's not used to this sort of kindness. "Could you explain to me where I am?"

And here's a man who notices everything, plain or otherwise. "Well, sweetheart, I'd say you just got here, given the way you're looking. You ain't hurt, though?"

She blinks at him and refrains from biting her lip.

"No, sir--" she doesn't know why she called him that "--I'm fine."

He takes a drag on his cigarette. "That's good. Only insult, no injury. Where are you from?"

"Holland," she says. "And England, really." She watches him curiously. He certainly doesn't dress or speak like anyone she knows.

Jaenelle gets up when someone new enters and examines her with a little smile, her eyes rather eerily blue. She still looks rather pale and green around the gills, but she summons a smile. "Hello, there."

Iris looks at her and blinks.

"Oh, hello, I didn't realize there was someone here." She does a little curtsy.

Jaenelle curtseys back. "Well, I did just wander in. Are you new here, then?"

"I must be new," she says, "but I didn't mean to --" She stops before she makes a fool of herself.

"Are you lost, Miss? Most of us are."

"Most of us?" She frowns a bit. "Where am I?"

The first person I met here just called it The Mansion, which seems ridiculous to me. All I know is that it is important for me to be back at Oxford before the term ends, and yet I appear to be stuck here.

That aside, it's not bad. There's a nice kitchen, library, beautiful grounds, a comfortable commons room...all kinds of things. There doesn't seem to be an end to the rooms here, but that is impossible!

At any rate, the best thing to do seems to be just to get used to it. Just watch out for some of the food you find lying around...some of it is...strange.

OOC: I must be ill or something! Patricia Donleavy is not this friendly. Oh, well. Maybe she's just having a good day!!
