A very ancient looking book with a black cover and a gold patterning that may look like a face on it (should someone close the book to inspect it) lies open on a table in the main room of the mansion. Where it came from or how it got there is a mystery. But there it is. And in bold letters it states very clearly on the open page:

Topsy stops to read the words on the page. Because she can, and it turns out that some books can actually be quite interesting (with pictures and everything!).

And, because she's Topsy, she loudly declares: "No."

The book reacts silently with new words forming on the page:

Why not?

How is that a reason? The pages will burn brilliantly.

David is familiar with all manner of peculiar different books, so seeing a new one resting upon a desk piques his interest. He walks over and with the most gentle hand, picks it up. Slowly, he examines the cover, reading the words to himself before he opens the cover to see what's inside...

More words form on the page as he reads:

Burn this book that you have in your hands right now.

Please.

I beg of you.

He barely shows a hint of surprise as he continues to read. His fingers trailing the words.

"And why might I want to do a thing like that?"

Because I am trapped in here and I want my pain to end.

Arabella sees the page's inscription and laughs. "Whyever would one do that?"

More words appear as she speaks.

To be compassionate and put a poor soul out of his misery.

She blinks, to make sure she's really seeing properly. "I was not aware books had such feelings," she says warily.

If he has not been burned already, Susan will look at the open page in curiosity. "Whyever would someone want to do that?" She murmers, mostly to herself. She can't understand why anyone would want to destroy a book. (And overly compassionate as she is, she may well obey the instructions should he speak to her).

He is very much still trapped within the book. Words appear when she approaches.

For compassion? I am trapped in here and I am tired of being here. It would be an end to the pain if you were just to burn the book.

Please.

Which causes her to startle in surprise, "Oh! Trapped? How awful... how on earth did it happen?" She picks up the book gently, and moves nearer to the fire in the hearth.

It was a foolish mistake. I overheard something I was not supposed to and I was condemned to this.

Please just cast me into the fire so my miserable existence can be ended.

*She will always stop to look at a book, and when she sees the words on that one, she shakes her head, smiling, and says, half to herself* Oh, of course not. *She then runs a thoughtful hand over the page.*

As her hand runs across the page more words form under her fingertips.

Please. Why won't you?

*A sharp intake of breath, and a long pause. But she has seen odd things before in her life, and especially here. Hesitantly, quietly,* Because I don't burn books. Why should I?
