Without noticing her surroundings, she collapses into a chair, sobbing as if her heart were breaking and clutching a tear-stained letter in her hand. This is Marianne Dashwood, who's just received some very bad news. Who'd like to comfort her?

*ack, it's a man! --And a soldier, no less! will just be searching for her handkerchief, then, and dabbing at her eyes* I -- I have just found I am no longer engaged, sir.

*blinks* And why is that?

*wibbling, yes* He is engaged to another.

*shakes her head, still sobbing*

*shakes her head again* No th-thank you, miss.

*shakes her head, hiccuping a little* I doubt it, miss.

[modestnature]

"Oh. If-if you are sure of that..."

*nods, a little tearfully* I fear not much can be done, without Willoughby.

Michael watches her for a moment, head titled and expression a little quietly sad. Then he walks up to her and brushes back her hair, wiping at her tears with his fingertips. "What has happened?"

*pulls back a bit, trying not to cry* I -- oh, he has left me!

*dabs at her eyes* He-- he is engaged to someone else.
