Spade was smoking a cigarette as usual, and had been watching the entrance hall most of the morning. Quite a deluge of new arrivals. But this new man looked intelligent, and reacting in a way that seemed much more normal than most.
And so, the tall, angular detective stepped out into view. "Seems to be the question, doesn't it. I've been trying to find out for days now, and I'm still not sure." He indicated the gore with his cigarette. "You need that looked at?"
Strelnikov puts a hand to his head, which still seems to surprise him. "Maybe not...." He doesn't smile but he isn't hostile. "A change of clothes maybe."
Spade nods. "Come on, we'll find you a room. It should have what is charmingly called a 'plothole.'" Spade shakes his head. "And yes, I realize I am not making sense. It's contagious around here. But I'm sure you want a place to get cleaned up, regardless."
Something about the shock and unfamiliarity makes him less suspicious than normal. He'll be glad to get into something clean. "That would... be appreciated." He'll follow Spade to a room and at least strip out of his coat and start trying to clean up.
"Everything is too clean to be Russia," was Pasha's unthinking automatic reply. Then he looked closely at the man who'd spoken to him. "Are you an exile?"
There's a faint pause at that--he'd never wanted to be czar, but he is now, and he can't really change that fact, but this isn't Russia. "I suppose you could call me that, yes."
