She meant to break down that door and see whether the Doctor and, above all, the wife of Evremonde were inside, and she had been hindered by that horrible English woman, and then she had meant to shoot her, and then there had been a lot of noise and a lot of light ( Read more... )

Armand takes in her and her red cap with bleak surprise. It figures with the week he's had. "Oh go away, citoyenne. You're not wanted here." Yes, it's obvious he's French, and he's very well-dressed with a somewhat outlandish (for their time period anyway) fur-lined blue cloak over his suit.

She raises both eyebrows, looking him up and down. "Now, now, citoyen! What way is that to greet a decent, hardworking woman? The least you could do is tell me where we are and who you are. Truly that would be the least you could do."

"It's called the Mansion. I am Armand St. Just."

He thinks again, and tries to be polite. "If you're in need of refuge for a few days, there are always rooms upstairs, but we don't need any of your kind here causing trouble. This... place is chaotic enough with a revolution."

"St. Just?" Now the stare grows even more intense. "Related to a certain Louis Antoine, by any chance?"

"And whose Mansion is it? - As for whether I am needed or not, I think I can decide that for myself."

*here's yet another Frenchboy, regarding the lady's red cap with pleasant surprise* We normally just call it the Mansion, citoyenne. *and here's a smiling bow* I am Marius Pontmercy.

"Oh. But whose Mansion?"
She nods to him, pausing in her knitting. "A pleasure to meet you, Citoyen Pontmercy. I am called Thérèse Defarge."

He shrugs. "No one's quite sure, really. I haven't found out, and I've been here for almost two years." And then, a smile. "Enchantee, Citoyenne Defarge."

She does not smile, but, as far as she is capable of liking people, she doubtlessly likes him (or at least doesn't dislike him).

"Goodness! But if you do not know what kind of place this is, perhaps you know what kind of people live in this place?"

*he may not be French, but he could certainly be classified as a revolutionary* You are welcome here, madame.

"Thank you, citizen. Where exactly is 'here'?"

"I'm afraid I cannot tell you that, having recently arrived myself." Three weeks is recent, anyway, and he's been exploring things for most of that time. "I do know, however, that people can return from the dead here."

"Well, that would explain that." She nods, apparently satisfied, and doubtlessly takes a note in her knitting.

A mansion of sorts. Beyond that, I've not the faintest, even after all this time. Welcome, all the same.

"Astonishing, that so many people live here and have no idea where it is that they live. Eh bien." She nods. "Thank you, citoyen. May I enquire after your name?"

Patrice L'aigle, or Lesgles, or M. Holes-in-the-Elbows . . . most just call me Bossuet. *grins* Anything else you'd like to know, citoyenne?

"Hm. Do you by any chance know how you came to be here, citoyen Bossuet?"

A madhouse, as far as I can tell, but not so bad, for all that.

"That is a relief, I suppose."

Indeed. Where have you come from, Citizen?
