Arthur smiles, a wide smile of good-natured white teeth, and sets a hand on his nephew's shoulder. "You remember, nephew," he says, as kindly as if these were his good wishes for someone else. "Thank you."
"'Course," Gawain says easily, "Care to drop by for dinner later?"
That this may result in some awkwardness has occured to Gawain, but Clar threatened dire fates if he didn't extend the invite, and considering that while Gawain is pretty sure Clar doesn't mean it, he can never be entirely certain...
The smile then becomes a laugh, deep and clear. "I would not dare refuse." While Arthur has finely honed his skills of backing out gracefully, he also is fond enough of Gawain that he wouldn't dare use them.
This isn't the best idea he's ever had, but it's also not the worst. Unfortunately, there's still time.
Melehan has no birthday wishes for his grandfather. Instead, he watches Gawain. "What do you mean, uncle," he says in a controlled voice, "that you do not save such wishes for your brother?"

Gawain's honestly not sure how this'll go, but seeing as how it's a course he's committed to, he might as well be cheerful about it.
