Movie Filming

So, one of the events that took place over the last month when I wasn't updating much was the filming of a movie... a "teaser trailer", to be more precise.

My friend orlon came home from California for the holidays. orlon (a.k.a. Eric) has his own film production company called Westbound Pictures, and while he was here he wanted to do some filming for a couple upcoming feature-length projects he has planned.

One of those projects is a fantasy "sword and sorcery" movie. For this project, he first wants to film the "teaser trailer" which will be used to generate interest and backing for the full project later on down the road. So, he cast barcrawler (a.k.a. J) as a roguish warrior character and me as the wise wizard!

We spent two days prior to Christmas doing some filming (I think it was the 20th and 21st, but I might have that wrong). The first day was spent in Eric's mom's backyard doing some green-screen shots, from which he will then mask out the green background and superimpose me and J onto other scenes such as ancient ruins or reacting to monsters. After that, we then went out to "Aberdeen", a little nature-trail, swimming hole area outside of Elizabethtown to film some shots of "the brave adventurers" out in the wilds. Quite a bit of good footage was shot that day, but the best shot by far was one where J and I are walking in a snow-covered field while Eric rode by in his sister's car traveling the opposite direction and filmed from out of the sunroof. The result was a fantastic shot that looks like a helicopter fly-by shot... very epic "Lord of the Rings" looking!

The second day of shooting involved some filming of J on horseback (I wasn't there for that), then we gathered at Bube's Brewery to do some filming in The Catacombs, since they provide a fantastic set for that "dungeon" or "cave" look. gillipsie (a.k.a. Lynn) showed up to do the lighting for the scenes. Again, alot of good footage was shot.

For the part of the mage, I broke out my wizard regalia and Eric had me made up with make-up and fake beard to look the part of an aged wizard. The beard wasn't quite right on the first day (way too thick and poofey), but the second day had the beard tamed and under control.

In total, about two hours of worth of footage was shot... the final product is only going to be about 2 minutes long, so there is going to be alot of quick cuts from scene to scene. One of the coolest things about this is that Eric filmed several shots of me gesturing like I am casting spells.... he's going to take that footage into an FX program on his computer and put in the effects so I'm casting lightning bolts or whatever. I can't wait to see the finished product!!!

Eric is due to come back sometime this month or in February to do more filming, then he will finish the trailer and post it to his website. Once that is done, or when I get some stills from the footage, I'll be sure to let all of you know so you can take a look.
