It seems like an overdramatization of the common knowledge that in a relationship, one person tends to be the dominant one while the other person is the submissive. And I don't think that's necessarily true either. For example, I tend to be a dominant person (the "devourer" in your analogy) but the women I'm most attracted to also tend to be very strong-willed. Obviously, in those relationships there tends to be a bit of tension at the beginning, while boundaries are being established. And when two assertive people date it requires good negotiation skills on each side, otherwise the whole thing just explodes. On the whole, however, I think it's worth it. I couldn't stand dating a submissive person - sooner or later, having everything I want would just get boring, you know?
(BTW, please don't take offense to this - I'm not saying that there's anything wrong with submissives, just that I personally tend not to be romantically attracted to them. To be fair, I know some people who are very happy with their submissive partners, so
