Passwords

Recently mrdreamjeans posted about how we've become accustomed to speed-dialing on our phones, rather than memorizing or looking up numbers in a printed phonebook. That made me think about Pass Words … I've got dozens of them active (for amazon.com, for union business, for any number of internet transactions, etc), and wonder how people manage to remember all ( Read more... )

I have reason to think that's a wise approach that you're not going to regret anytime soon :0)

Tim has encouraged me to use the app that stores all of the passwords in once place, but it feels a bit too complicated for me. Most of my passwords are variations on other passwords and items that are meaningful to me. However, I do have a document that would not be obvious to others where I write down the passwords I don't use too often.

I did ask in the post you referenced if folks had a hard copy address book. It appears that about half of my friends still do ...

ps ... I like Phil's response!! :)

Oh yeah, 'Mr Creative' did come up with a clever idea (and a memorable way to let off a bit of steam) - LOL.

Like you, I've sometimes come up with passwords related to something happening in my life when I formulated the password.
I suppose a reason why half your friends still work with a hard copy address book is that we are of a 'certain age'… I still have and use a Rolodex ;0)

Right click on each bookmark
Edit "properties"
There in free form box provided...the password goes (in a very simple encoded format)...Hundreds of passwords are stored in my bookmarks..accessible from wherever I am ...where there is an internet connection

Not a bad idea, and it doubtless works for you.
tsk… wish I trusted computers more than I do.

I use the same few, which probably conpromises security, but hey. I use a unique password for my bank accounts. I have heard that some people are putting their passwords in their wills so that their nearest and dearest will be able to access/delete certain accounts.

Good point … even if I don't get the passwords into my will, I should probably alert my executors about where the 'notebook' is located (and what it looks like).

I don't write down passwords, but I do write down clues to them, especially at work.

For example, my password for a specific software or website might be "Sis's middle" + "Dad's b-day year" for "Gail1933." This way they are secure, but I can mentally retrieve them.

I often recommend co-workers do this whenever I see them just jotting actual passwords down.

Very clever! …I should try this myself.
