2007 Top Te... Some Positive Integers! (Music)

Jan 03, 2008 08:43

On the Tenth Day of Christmas, my true love gave to me: an utterly incomplete and unsubstantial Top Ten list...

Before i throw this together, for the fourth annual Top Ten for me, i should make the following statement:

i have not listened to enough new albums in their entirety to actually do this right.  So, this will be more of a top five, with honorable mentions and compilations - which i can't really justify calling albums.  That being said, 2007 was a great year for music.  i only wish that i had the time, energy, and budget to keep up with things.  Barring that, i guess you'll just have to stick with a guy who usually doesn't pick things up until they've been around for a while - but loves them intensely anyway.

Like last year's Daft Punk.  i didn't think i would like it and avoided it then.  Now?  Now i'm just grateful that no one rides with me that often, or they might hurt me to stop the repetition that my cd player has been getting.  Same thing with Stereolab.

Other year end music reviews from people that are smarter than i about such things:

NPR's Songs of the Year
KEXP's 90.3 Top Albums of the Year (listen here)
Best Hip Hop of 2007 (NPR+KEXP)
Kevin Cole's 13 Great Musical Discoveries of 2007
John Richard's Top Ten (not up as of yet) (his recent recommendations on KEXP.org)
TIG Staffers Top Lists
TIG Editors Top Lists

So there you go.  i'd check out the above links as well since i tend to agree with much of what the aforementioned smart people like.  And not just because i'm some sort of poseur.  Actually, some of it i can't stand.  Well, if you take the brunt of music produced throughout the world, there is probably very little that i actually do like quite a bit.  And if it has made it's way onto commercial popular radio, then i probably entirely dislike it.

But then again, i did hear a Decemberists song playing at the frickin' airport this year.  So i guess that either means things are getting better, or that i'm old now.

'Twas a great year in music!  May we all enjoy this year!  And may next year's list be more complete.
