I didn't know it was your birthday! Happy belated, my dear.
OOH! The Rum Diary is being directed by Bruce Robinson, who wrote and directed one of my favourite films of all time--- "Withnail and I." It's an English black comedy about two out-of-work actors at the end of the '60's, who essentially live in complete squalor in Camden where they do nothing but booze. The "I" character suggests that they hit up Withnail's obscenely gay rich uncle Monty for his house in the country, and when they get up there to the cottage they find that things are worse there than they are in Camden. Drunken hilarity ensues, especially after Uncle Monty follows them so he can try to seduce "I." Startlingly, the film is mostly autobiographical. It's VERY funny and VERY quotable. See it!
Thompson was one of my favourite writers when I was young and insane, and I've always meant to read that but have put it off many times. You've motivated me to check this out finally and the film sounds like it will be brilliant fun.
Nice post-again happy yer older now day. Enjoy and congrats on the upcoming short!
