Edited: Going Too Far

Jul 21, 2009 21:46

Lccorp2 is right; I am going too far with the world building. I deleted the entry that relates to the plot, since I'm taking it to the lands beyond writing into making a story out of the effort.

Doesn't mean I'll delete all my world building notes; I won't. I won't go either extremes, like not planning at all and going with the flow -Like Lccorp- or ( Read more... )

stories, maps, anoria, atanor, arrious, cool

I know it's great to plan and the likes, but the best thing to do is actually WRITE.

Unless you mention that you're actually doing that somewhere and I didn't see it.

Mostly this is planning for book 3 -- book one is in the works, in terms of world building (That takes time. Just look at Llorytales), but this is mostly for inserting Cekhov's guns and the plot emphesis.

Thanks for passing by!

All the planning in the world won't do you any good if you don't write anything. The greatest idea is useless without prose to bring it to life.

The first draft of anything will invariably suck. Planning will reduce the editing required, but you'll still need to do it.

For clarification: I'm not denying the usefulness of planning. I'm just saying that it's a means to an end, and from what I've been reading there's all means and no end. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but it's what I've been seeing.

World building is what gives a story the right to be a novel. Writing comes after planning, and the more planning one makes refines and betters their writers instinct. We all saw what happened when there were Ass-Pulls galore in Eragon.
I take world building as an exersize; actually writing is a waste of time during this stage of development.

And I think we will all agree that the most important part of the book is the text itself.

It is, but just writing doesn't do anything; in just writing with no understanding of my own world, I will be exactly like Paolini. It's not like I'm undermining the importance of writing itself, I am just focusing on making my world first, and then practicing writing on something I'm familiar with rather than jumping into nothing.

Ahh, teenage heroes! So much potential, most of which wasted!

On the question: No, Arrious isn't even ruling Atarnor, or any country in anoria in that matter. It's the topic of book 2, so... Yeah... |:D

It's not completely planned yet, but he's the nominated ruler of the Unari later on. Not very Gary-Stu once you know what he did.

He's not the only ruler, either.

Sort of makes one feel bad about how he's leaving home after all he did, and taking many Ar'Sorai with him back to their homelands. :(
