Goodbye Mew... + Pixiv Art Theft?

Fuck... I feel so horrible right now. I just found out that a girl named Hituji, a Japanese pokemon fan artist, closed her website down. For the record.... she was one of the BEST mew fanartists ever. As silly of a reason to feel horrible.... when I found out, it honestly felt like a piece of me was ripped off and lost forever. Her website had TONS ( Read more... )

I don't think using someone's art in an icon is art theft. If they give credit to actually made the picture then great. If they didn't it's no big deal. Art theft, to me at least, if when someone takes a picture and claims it as their own. Simply making an icon is not saying it's yours.

I truely hope it's ok, at least for icons. I know as an artist, I wouldn't want anyone taking my art and using it for anything, unless they asked me first hand. I've had a few times when people would want to colour my linearts, or use a certain fanart for their website with credit, and I let them just because they were kind and respectful enough to ask first. But you can hardly ever ask a Japanese artist who might not understand English. Also, with most of the people using this art for their icons, they don't bother to research the actualy artist's name, they just say "from Pixiv", which is barely credit in my eyes. That's like taking my art without my permission and saying "I got this from DeviantArt". Every time I save any art I like, I make an effort to label files and folders with the real name or alias of the actual artist... I just can't understand how so many people who I thought I could trust and respect would think it's simply "ok" to use artwork that they have no rights to, and not make an effort to either ASK permission or ( ... )

No worries about the rant. Different people just have so many outlooks on the same thing. That's why there are laws. :D Plus all artists are different too. One time I found an icon that was an animated version of my boyfriend's work. I asked him what he wanted to do about it and he said he didn't care. -shrug-

hey bb, you can probably get to an archived version of the site using web.archive.org's wayback machine :]
and also -- it doesn't bother me at all when people make icons out of others' art. i mean, maybe it's just me, but it's an icon, 100x100 pixels. they can hardly put the full image in there, so usually they just use a little clip or a tiny version. i mean, it wouldn't bother me if someone used my art as an icon, even without my permission or knowing about it. /$0.02
