She doesn’t have her office anymore to hide in when she’s gotten tired of the people around her. The size of Safe Haven is too small for people like them- people who need space once in a while to clear their heads (or to be in control, as with Alpha).

But there’s a spot outside the main house, just a few feet away from where they plant the carrots, a spot where she could find some solace and silence. It looks entirely different during the day, somehow managing to look as unremarkable as the rest of the trees in the entire compound. At night, however, when the main house becomes too noisy and Topher has fallen asleep despite the noise, she goes to sit under this tree and feels calmness wash over her.

Adelle watches the merriment in the house through the shadows.

“Hey.”

She looks up and sees Dominic walking towards her. He looks cleaner than he did when he arrived this afternoon - a return from a month-long absence - carrying a bag of things that will be very helpful around the compound.

“Why aren’t you inside?” he asks.

“Why aren’t you?” she asks back.

Regardless of the darkness, she sees him smile. She motions to the empty spot beside her, “Have a seat.”

He sits beside her. She leans on him as he takes her hand. They sit under the tree in silence, not really bothering to talk. It’s a force of habit. They’ve accomplished so much together without words and talking seems the most overrated form of communication (although not all relationships in life work like this).

“I feel as though I’ll always be the one person on the outside looking in.” she says after a while when they hear laughter coming from the main house.

She’s never been ‘inside’, so to speak. She’s always been outside the group, even when she was a child. And she never had any problems with it. Except now that the world has ended-

“You’re not the only one on the outside, Adelle.” He says and she turns to look at him. He shrugs, “Always been that way. If you ask me, I prefer it.” He pulls her closer.

“And besides,” he adds, “I have a feeling you don’t really care that you’re always outside looking in.”

Adelle smiles.
