People are born, they live and they die.

This was what the world was a long time ago. People were born to immeasurable potential. All their life they tried fulfilling them. And in the end, they all died with the realization that life didn’t give them a fair chance because their bodies were limiting.

But the forefathers of the Ebb found a way around the frailty of the human body. They created a new world, where everyone can achieve their dreams and live without the fear of their bodies giving out on them.

Now, people are born, they live, and in the Ebb, they live forever.

Adelle DeWitt knows about the history of the Ebb more than any other person in this large virtual abyss. And this knowledge helps her as one of the twenty regulators, a Madam, of the House of Dolls- the institution that gave birth to the Ebb and is the most respected and most-protected establishment in the world.

Her position gives her great stature in society, but also saddles her with great responsibilities. And unlike her esteemed colleagues, she takes her responsibilities seriously.

She gazes at the beach in front of her, cradling a cup of tea in her hands. The ocean is blue and calm and it’s very tempting to jump in and enjoy the water. To forget all her problems.

A wry smile appears on her face and she shakes her head. Anarchists can’t be defeated by enjoying the water, can they?

She turns away and discards the sight. The beach shimmers away and is replaced by the solid, warm hues of her office. She takes a seat on her chair and reads the report of the security program, a self-aware AI called Dominic.

Anarchists have been trying to bring down the institution, thinking that by doing so, everything would go back to the way it once was. Dominic thwarts their attacks every single time.

Even with all her knowledge about the beginnings of the Ebb, she doesn’t know who created the Dominic. The AI is unique to her House- it’s the only program in the institution that had created a human representation of itself. Virtual Human Dominic is a tall, blond, unsmiling and humorless dapper man with blue eyes. It (or rather, he) can confound and scare clients, which she finds somewhat endearing.

A human representation is better than hearing an omniscient voice blathering about security.

She hears a chime, Dominic’s version of a knock. Seconds later, he materializes in front of her.

“Good morning, Ma’am.” He greets, hands behind his back. He’s wearing a dark red tie today, like her dress. The AI is fond of complementing his outfits with hers.

“Good morning, Mr. Dominic.” She greets back (it would seem rude to call him just Dominic), “Let’s have our morning rounds, shall we?” she asks as she stands up.

He motions towards the door, which opens on his command, and walks a step just behind her.
