Worrying about the energy future

I've been reading Do The Math for awhile now; it's a mathematical / statistical / physics-based analysis of our energy consumption as a planet and the ramifications of that consumption for the future. I highly recommend it if you're interested in that kind of thing. Reading the articles, and my own thinking about humanity, has raised the following

And there are any number of other advances in alternative energy as well that you could link to. The point is not that nobody is researching this stuff; it's that we aren't making the massive investments in infrastructure and large plants needed to be able to run our society without massive inputs of fossil fuels.
