My Big Fat Fall TV Overview, Part 1

Oct 14, 2006 22:24

This started out as my overview of the 2006 Fall Season, but it turned into an overview of the last six years of network television.  So beware.

I haven’t even done my commentary on the new shows yet, and already the networks are canceling shows and giving the old back nine to others.  Heroes gets the distinction of being the first official pick-up ( Read more... )

Interesting read, and man, I want your job, LOL! You know how I feel about JoA, so we won't go there, LOL! I too adored Rome with a passion, but agree that there's nothing on the horizon to be wonderfully obsessed with that is wonderful. I'm still obsessed with VM, but I'm not happy about it, because the show is just such a basket of wasted potential now, it makes me cry.

I think the saddest observation in this whole essay was that you used to wait years for shows that you loved to start to go downhill. Yeah. Now, it happens in the second year. Without fail.

I had to go back and edit, because soemhow the paragraph about 2005 was in the wrong place. This is what I get for rambling on too long.

I want your job, LOL!

Me, too. :( I don't have that job anymore. I left the safety of development to go onto a show, which then got cancelled. Shows suck. Development is awesome.

TV shows do seem to have short lives these days. BSG is the only show that has really thrilled me recently, but it's so overwhelmingly dark that I don't know how long I can keep up with it. I loved the premiere of The Office but the last episode left me a little bored. Too much Dwight, not enough Jim.

because just when I thought a teen show couldn’t have two better young actors than Amber Tamblyn and Chris Marquette, Kristen Bell and Jason Dohring came along, and brought with them the added bonus of kissing with their mouths open (and dear, sweet JD actually showed us some tongue. God bless him!).Don't remind me of that awesome physical chemistry that JD and KB once had. I miss it so ( ... )

ITA, though I did love the bit about the robot. That was genius.

I just wanted to say that because I do think you have a gift in that area.

Thank you! I really appreciate that. I'm in the market for a new career; maybe I should look into this TV critic thing. If I could make a living doing this, I would be in heaven.

even in the holy S1, I thought they were unconvincing and weird (as in borderline incestuous) together.

I felt that in this week's ep, when V was comforting Keith. It's weird that she's more intimate and demonstrative with her father than she is with her boyfriend, even when she and said bf are in bed together.

I haven't heard of Torchwood. I'll have to check that out.

And I am ashamed to admit that I've started watching reality TV again, which I had sworn off -- not the good reality TV, but the really cheesy stuff like ANTM and DwtS.

Matt and Danny are the second coming of Dan and Casey.

this thought, right here? this is why I want to talk tv with you. :)

I was never into JoA, cause Amber Tamblyn annoyed the poop outta me in something or other right before it aired, but I'll check the 1st season out if it's that good. I'm sorry that you didn't like Jason Ritter in that, cause I fell in love with him in Happy Endings. Don Roos gets amazing stuff out of actors that you never think you'll see. Tom Arnold was great in that movie. No, I'm not kidding. Tom Arnold was amazing. Try it and see if you're anymore kindly inclined towards Ritter.

I've almost completely dropped the new stuff out this year. I agree with you on Heroes, and wish I was better about watching Studio 60, but it's just not in me this fall. The only thing I'm actually setting my VCR for is VM, and I won't have tivo til November. Hopefully Studio 60 can survive til then without me.

Hey, you don't need to sell me on Tom Arnold. I love that guy. He won me over in True Lies (one of the best movies ever made).

I think Studio 60 is going to get cancelled, so don't bother with that. the ratinge were dismal last night. And that reminds me, I need to do a ratings post...

this, combined with the Casey/Dan comment above, is why I love you.

nooooo! can't be cancelled! I know I've been a slackery horrible excuse for a fan, but I was hoping it would stick around for at least a year and I could season pass it in Nov and catch up with the inevitable after sweeps repeats.

oh She Of The Inside Info, have you heard anything more on the three in CW dev I emailed you about? also, heads up: table read here in the building this morning for Miss/Guided, half hour sitcom by Fox for ABC with Judy Greer.

Hey! Before I can friend you, I need you to fill out your LJ at least a little bit. It may not be your fav format, but I'm not a blogger -- this ratings thing is something I really just do for my friends, most of whom are VM fans, so that's the focus of my analysis. Also, the Nielsens demo stuff is proprietary, so I need to trust my friends not to re-post it anywhere public, and thus it helps if you're part of the LJ community.

Also, I'm a big fan of discussion (hence my love/hate relationship with TWoP), so I'd be more likely to friend you if you comment on the content of my posts and tell me what you think. I'd like to think that you're actually interested in reading my journal and not just looking for ratings. :) Yeah, I'm insecure that way.

I'm not that great at discussion; I never feel like I add much. Although I would like to know more about your ex-boyfriend's experiences working on Arrested Development (RIP :( ) The writers on the show were geniuses, I don't know how they ever came up with so much material that worked perfectly.
