I am, most often, NOT able to post comments on friends' blogposts. Forgive me friends, I'm not guilty of snootiness...it is increasingly rare for me to be able to post comments

Have you tried a different browser, Deepa? Have you put in a support request to LJ?
Unfortunately the ONLY way to avoid spam is to lock posts. If most spam is on old post, leave your newer posts open for a week and then lock them.

You should also report spam comments as spam.

You've been having these difficulties for quite a while and I don't know anybody else who has such ongoing problems with LJ...it is indeed weird.
