I actually once asked my very prim grandmother about how they dealt with the menstrual cycle back when she was young (late 1800s). She said there was an old sack with clean rags and pins in the pantry and they would go there when they started, fold the rag up and pin it to their knickers. Then there would be a bucket with fresh water and a lid out near the loo (when it was an outhouse) and they would put the used rags in there, all very secretive, but she also had 4 other full sisters so I guess the bag and bucket was in pretty constant use.
So much secrecy and so many taboos about a natural bodily function that is absolutely necessary for bringing new life into the world.
I'm so sorry you had to grow up with such an awful experience regarding periods. I never had that problem thankfully though I hated them mostly due to the first two days of horrible cramps I had to endure. Otherwise, I only used pads for the first few years and at age 15 I started using tampons which was a liberation once I figured out just how to insert them. You had an early menopause which was a true liberation for you, I see. Me! I had to wait till age 53 before I stopped completely.
