Sometimes a 'fixer upper' isn't too bad for a new house. Our house still needs new floors, a new fence in the backyard, new windows, new doors, the overhang on the front porch needs to be sealed, the garage needs to be rebuilt.... And you figure, you'll be living there for awhile so it's not like you won't have time to make repairs. (We've been at our house for about a year and a half now and we still haven't started!)
Honestly, my mindset is the exact opposite. We aren't going to be here as long, so I don't want a fixer-upper, because it would stress me out to have to fix it 'in time', as quickly as I could, to get the value up so we could get a better home. Sure, we may be there for five years, maybe a bit more, but this isn't a forever home... it's our 'first ever' home
( ... )
Ah, if there's a bunch of odors in the house, that's different. But usually....you'll live in a house for 10 years before you can get the value up enough to sell it. (Unless you're talking about doing some major repairs/additions to the house to drive up the price.) The house we're in now isn't a 'forever' house. It's still way too small for us. But it's what we could afford at the time.
Especially with allergies and my super-sensitive sinuses. Yea...
I don't really want to buy a house to drive up the price, but that's the only reason I can see for buying a fixer-upper other than "crap we can't get anything else"... and with the amount I'm willing to spend, we should be able to get something else. As a lot of people told us, it takes a while to find the right house. Hopefully we'll find it.
After as not-here I've been for how many months, I don't think you have any reason to apologize, lovely. Take your time. I love you and miss you guys... ;-;
::tight hugs:: Thanks sweety. She's not my biological grandmother (she's my godmother), but she raised me like she was my grandmother, so it's about the same thing. <3
As for the house, I'll say we bought a fixer upper but we also had a posse of friends who could blitz projects with us, granted we double the value from what we paid for it, but our next house? WE WILL NOT WORK ON. *grin* No really, it was fun to do together, but well, fun can only last so long till you are at OMG we have to strip the floors NOW? *GAH*
Yes, having a safe and sound godmother is a blessing. I'm so thankful she made it through that alright.
Sadly while our friends are probably willing to help us, I also realize that we and they all have lives, and there are maybe only one or two of them that really would have the time to help. And only one of them would really know what he was doing, because Joel and I wouldn't. ;op I don't mind fixer upper homes, but really... I don't want to live in one. Maybe I'll buy one and spend my spare time fixing it up as a hobby, then resell for profit. But that'd be something for when I'm rolling in the cash.
I'm trying not to stress too much, but boy do I fail a lot. I sure hope you're right...
Thankfully our nearest and dearest couple friends bought a house the same day we did and we've spent the last 6 years playing "fix this room" in each house. *grin* It's been fun, but I'd never recommend tearing down walls, ripping up floors or ICKY redo the whole kitchen to anyone who isn't living the life or ease already. *grin*
Though I will say, ripping out a wall does do wonders to alleviate stress! One sledge hammer and some good noise? It's a good way to spend a day. *grin*
Really though, we went through it, as have most of our friends, a house will find you.
