I checked out the first season because I hadn't seen Martin Freeman in anything and wanted to check him out pre-movie. I really liked the concept of having Sherlock in modern times, but like you, I do think that I prefer the movie over the TV show. The main reason being Robert Downing, Jr. It could be that I'm just more familiar with him than I was/am with the actor from the series. Plus, the movies have the opportunity for bigger action and to give a slight more comedic edge. The show seems to me to somewhat follow the British cop-series formula - more dramatic, not so much humor. It's a great formula, but there are times when I like a little bit of fun amongst all the dead and bloodied bodies.
How wonderful, though, to live in a world where we can have both the movie and the show!
