Dumbledore is gay...?

Oct 20, 2007 12:10

Okay. I get that. It makes a certain amount of sense. But why did she never put it in the books? Too afraid of the reaction over a gay character in children's books? Especially a gay character in charge of children?

"Oh, my God, the fanfiction," she says. Oh yeah, lady. Now you've unleashed a monster. You've just validated one hell of a lot of

politics: gay pride, books: harry potter

I'm flippin' ecstatic! I didn't suspect it but now she's said it, well it makes total sense, doesn't it :)

JKR ROCKS! :D

It does make total sense, especially with Grindelwald, but I am still disappointed in her for not actually putting it down on paper. I'd have been a lot more excited if it had actually been book canon, rather than just 'stuff JKR said later'.

I can't stop giggling! I don't know why but this whole revelation makes me laugh! I couldn't give a crap if he's gay or not, but like you wonder why there were no hints towards this in the book.

Just makes you wonder just how close Snape and Dumbledore were...

Gak! No! Not Snape and Dumbledore! Ewwwww. Do not want! For some reason I have a major aversion to Snape slash. Whether it's Snape/Dumbledore, Snape/Harry, Snape/Lupin, Snape/Sirius - it's all ewww to me!

Seeing as I don't read fanfiction, I have no preference XD

But come on, the whole 'Dumbledore's Man' is soooo going to be questioned now. How exactly was he Dumbledore's man? XD

Sexual favours in return for forgiveness!

Ack. Out of my brain!

It is a bit of a shame all these 'revelations' she's come out with since book 7 never actually made the books themselves. If it's SO important, why not just put it in the book in the first place? Although I can already see the anti-HP lobbyists protesting about a homosexual character in a children's book. Idiots.

And tbh Dumbledore/Grindelwald is more believable than Lupin/Tonks, and that WAS in the book! That just seemed to come out of nowhere and seemed very contrived.

Yeah, I do kind of get the sense that she's revealing this now when it's safe and the books are all out and it won't lose her fans or money. I would have liked to see in print.

And yeah, Lupin/Tonks? Never got that. Remus/Sirius all the way!

hmmm... I think my reaction to this is very similar to how I ended up reacting to Lupin/Tonks. Yes, I wanted it. But I didn't want it like thisDumbledore was all kinds of brilliant, and I don't think it would have been all that hard to actually bring up the question of his sexuality during the course of Book 7 (surely it could easily have come up in conversation, some time during that long camping trip?) and it would have gone more towards Harry's "OMG I NEVER KNEW DUMBLEDORE" thing ( ... )

I was so bitter with HP7 that it's going to take a while before I can come back to the books. But I think what you say makes perfect sense. And as for Remus/Sirius, I still can't quite accept Lupin/Tonks - not in a crazy, OMGmyshipWTF way but in the way that in my head Remus is gay. He just is. It's not a shippy thing, that's just the way I see the character. And I think they played up to that in films, POA in particular - with the discrimination against him, his having to leave, his attachment to Sirius, the way they were with each other - Remus is gay. I don't care what JKR says. She's clearly just too chicken to put gay characters in her books, this latest revelation notwithstanding.

yeah I always wondered why she didn't make it canon before. But then, Dumbledore wears high heeled boots, he likes to dress kind of gay, he likes knitting, his letters to Grindelwald sounded like love letters... at that point I always thought I'm imagine things and DD is just very excentric, but it seems like he's a gay excentric :D...
