I'm glad you feel this way about Mary, who is actually my favorite historical figure to read about. Her traumatic childhood story (as told in a YA novel I read at age 13) is what first really suckered me into the Tudor family, and being obsessed with history overall, and I did research projects on her throughout my educational career (my extended essay for the International Baccalaureate program was on her, I did a paper on her and music for a "Tudor Music" class I took in undergrad, and then I wrote an exhibit script focused on her reign -- especially the extent to which she navigated new precedents as a queen regnant -- for an exhibit writing class in grad school). It was amazing to see how many new books had come out about her in the last 10 years (all the recent scholarship!) when I was working on the last project in 2012--books that would have been super handy in high school. :p This Whitehead book was actually one of the ones I read/used for the exhibit project, though I can't remember it too distinctly now ( ... )
